Our Young Ambassador Kiran
Kiran MistryKiran’s parents divorced when she was 7 months old, so she and her mother moved in with her grandparents. While her mother worked extremely long hours to support the family, Kiran’s grandparents raised her. When she was 7, her Grandma was diagnosed with cancer, and was hospitalised when Kiran was 11. While her Gran was in hospital, Kiran’s Grandfather suffered a stroke and passed away. The day after being told of her husbands death, Kiran’s Nan died. Kiran blamed herself, as her Grandfather had been bending to polish her shoes when he had his stroke.Feeling all alone, having lost both of her main carers in a few days, and blaming herself, Kiran began having fits and regressed to the mental age of a 4 year old, in what doctors felt was an attempt to relive her happiest times.
Now aged 19, Kiran is an intelligent, confident, beautiful young lady applying for universities this year. We couldn’t be more proud to have her as a Young Ambassador, and that she credits Edward’s Trust as helping to get her to where she is now.

Heather Derby is running in memory of Dane Peagram:
“Dane was born on my wedding day and despite a difficult start to life fought against the odds to enjoy his early years. He had the ability to light up the room with his smile and I have many happy memories of him growing up alongside my twins. Tragically Dane passed away aged 5 and left his family and friends totally devastated. Edwards Trust supported his Mum and family. I am in awe of the important work this charity does to support bereaved parents and families in Birmingham. I am really proud to pound the streets of Birmingham to raise money to support the amazing work they do! Please give what you can!”

Graham Ayres, In Memory of Jamie
Graham’s son Jamie was killed outside school by a drunk driver when he was 5. He was running back to school to fetch a father’s day card he had made for Graham. Graham want to support Edward’s Trust as he credits them with helping him return to work – teaching children the same age as Jamie.

Sarah and Friends running in memory of Joshua
Edwards Trust supported my family after I lost my precious son. It was a sudden death (meningitis). I attended support groups where I was allowed to just cry and cry without any judgement or anyone telling me it was going to be ok. I also got much comfort from the annual remembrance services held during the Christmas period. These services allowed me to get many emotions out so I was able to cope with Christmas much better.

debI lost my father in 2008, a week before my GCSE exams. Nothing prepares you for the loss of a parent. It is a scary, daunting and emotional time… a whirlwind of emotion that to any child or teenager can seem like the end of the world. I was put in touch with a similar charity to Edwards Trust called Round Oak Robins. I met other teenagers going through that same emotional journey; I heard their stories and together we created memories of our loved ones…and life long friendships.

Learning to cope with my emotions and understanding my loss was the first step in coming to terms with losing my dad and Round Oak Robins helped me every step of the way. Sadly due to a cut in funding Round Oak Robins closed down a couple of years ago. I and so many others lost that support network that Edwards Trust currently offers to other families and children coping with illness and bereavement (some of whom I have the privilege to know).

I am running for Edwards Trust not only to remember my dad but to thank them for their tireless efforts in supporting children and adults learning to cope with loss. Every penny counts. It really does.

Our Counsellor Katie Hobday
katieI am truly grateful for anything you can donate. Edwards trust has a very special place in my heart. I am a counsellor there and have the privilege of supporting bereaved parents through the darkest of days. Often it is a lifeline in times of desperation and deep tragedy. We rely solely on donations to continue this vital support. There are very few centres in the UK that provide this and i am passionate to do all I can to help the Trust survive this recession and continue the wonderful work we do. Fitting in my runs with the 4 bambinos and work is a tricky challenge but I am managing it and inspired by all my lovely clients and colleagues. Team 25 Update

There’s a few exciting bits of news to share!

Team Updates

We are now up to 53 runners! A brilliant bit of recruiting by Phil McKenzie has brought in 5 runners from Hollywood Monster, and three new runners from HSBC means we’ve got a bit of competition for who is the most athletic company! We also have a past service user and two friends, a Young Ambassador, the son of a Patron and Stuart Moseley, Director of SJ Mortgage Solutions, along with his partner.

Which brings me on to our most exciting update – We have a sponsor!!! Thanks to Stuart, SJ Mortgage Solutions ( http://www.sjmortgagesolutions.co.uk ) will be providing funds for very snazzy, newly designed running vest for everybody on the day. Hopefully this will make us stand out, and you can wear our professional looking shirts with pride! It also means we have more of a budget to make a real spectacle on the day, so that when you pass us at Mile 11 you will get a whole extra boost for that last stretch. It’s also a great chance to meet each other and share tips.

Training

Because it’s the Wolf run site, some of it will be aimed at ‘wild running’ obstacle courses rather than a straight forward run, but the rest is useful!

(We are thinking of entering something similar to this next year, so if you think it looks like something you’d enjoy let me know, as the amount of interest will determine how big of an event we make it.)

A few people have mentioned that they would like to train with other runners occasionally. If that sounds good to you, let me know and I will put you in touch with each other.

The Bupa Great Birmingham Run has been a big date on Edward’s Trust calendar since 2011, when a team of 73 runners took part to raise money to support bereaved children and families. With 2014 being Edward’s Trust’s 25th Year, it was important that we make this year one to remember – thanks to sponsorship from SJ Mortgages! SJ Mortgages have kindly provided us with funds to buy running vests for all of our current team of over 50, as well as other items to make the day extra special! We can now make October 19th a real celebration. Stuart Moseley, Director of SJ Mortgages, is also running the Half Marathon in support of Edward’s Trust, so he will be getting an extra cheer from our supporters on Calthorpe Road.

Team 25 Update

Team Members

Since our last update we have found 7 new runners, bringing us to a grand total of 39! These include –

– 2 from Twitter
– one member of staff
– one Trustee
– one from the Big Expo event (we were really cheeky)
– a supporter, who has previously run the Half Marathon in the Hollywood Monster mascot suit – this year we may even get to see his face!

There’s also more training advice on the site which, being as un-sporty as I am, I haven’t been able to try for myself, but it has been recommended by one friend who completed the Cardiff Half Marathon, having never run before.

Tips from Real Life Runners

We at Edward’s Trust may not be the sportiest bunch you’ll ever meet, but we do have some sporty friends. So, especially for Team 25, we asked our friends who have run Half Marathons – “what advice would you give somebody training for their first Half Marathon?” Here are the responses we got:

Antonio: Keep running!
Get good trainers, pace yourself and don’t get too competitive. A lot of injuries are caused by people trying to show off

Lynsey: Only increase mileage by 10% each week, great hints and tips in women’s running magazine. Incorporate threshold training, continuous hills training and core once each a week, and stretch!!! Reaching your goal is the best feeling in the world!!!

Adam: Just pace yourself, set clear and achievable targets and draw up a running plan in the 12 weeks before to steadily increment the number of miles you run. Always allow recovery time after a run and don’t forget to take energy gels and bars.

Vicky: Don’t eat anything you’ve never eaten before on race day!!! And don’t swing your arms back and forth and hips side to side, its a waste of energy!

Leo: No matter what your legs are screaming, your mind needs to engage and keep pushing.
Sports drinks aren’t all they are cracked up to be. Eat well and hydrate throughout the day. I trained for the Liverpool marathon without consuming a single sports drink.

Greg: A half marathon is just a 15km warm up with a 5km race at the end – pacing is key (I’m aware I left 1.3 out, but 16.3 doesn’t sound as good!)

BONUS – James is currently training for the London Marathon – yes, the full 26.1 miles!
James: aim to be hitting the speed / distance you want two Sundays before the race then ease off in the last two weeks, doing shorter easier runs so you have bags of energy on the day.
Trust your body. if you feel exhausted / have a niggle then take a day off. Injuries happen when you’re tired and are much more damaging to your program than missing a day.
If you have some tendonitis / muscle pain get some sports tape. Youtube how to wrap the area correctly. The stuffs brilliant.
